Wynberg is a working suburb: panel shops, spares dealers, workshops, wholesalers and small industrial units, right up against Marlboro and Alexandra. What Wynberg needs from a door

• Heavier gauge. On workshop and panel-shop openings we specify a thicker slat than a retail door would use, because these curtains get hit. A bent slat on a thin curtain drags every slat above it out of line.
• High-cycle gear. A spares counter with a roller door might cycle it thirty times a day. Commercial-duty motors and better barrel bearings cost more once and save a motor replacement every second year.
• Wide vehicle openings. Industrial shutters for the bays that take vehicles, built to the measured opening and braced for the span.
• Galvanised, always. Wynberg doors live outdoors and get washed down. Galvanised curtains with sealed cut edges are what stop the bottom rail rusting out in three years.

Repairs are most of what we do here

Very few Wynberg doors are new. We spend more time replacing bent slats, straightening guides, fitting new barrel bearings and rebuilding bottom rails than we do installing complete shutters. That is usually the right call financially — a curtain with six damaged slats near the bottom can be repaired for far less than a new door, and the top two-thirds have plenty of life left. We will tell you when it has gone past that point rather than fitting parts to something that will fail again.

Getting back to trading

If a shutter is stuck closed you cannot work, and if it is stuck open you cannot lock up. Both are same-day for us, and we carry the common parts on the van: bearings, guides, springs, cables, rollers and motor spares. Our emergency line runs 24 hours, which matters in a suburb where a lot of businesses close well after dark.

Servicing

Given the duty cycle here we recommend a six-monthly service rather than annual: guides cleaned and lubricated with dry PTFE, bearings checked, spring tension reset, fixings tightened, safety systems tested. The single cheapest thing you can do is sweep the threshold, because grit in the guides is what wears both curtain and guide.

What it costs in Wynberg

A repair is almost always the cheaper answer here and we lead with it. Replacing bent slats, a set of bearings, a bottom rail or a motor is a fraction of a new shutter, and on a curtain that is otherwise sound it buys years. A full replacement makes sense when the curtain is rusted through at the bottom across its width, when the guides are beyond straightening, or when the opening has been widened and the old door no longer suits it.

New shutters price on opening size, slat gauge and whether the door is manual or motorised. On a vehicle bay we will usually recommend spending on gauge and locking before spending on automation, because a hand-chain shutter that survives a knock is worth more here than a motorised one that does not.

Working around your trading hours
