Most garage door motors we replace did not fail on their own — they were undersized for the door, or the door got heavier as its springs aged and the motor took the strain. Replacing the operator without checking the door just buys you a year.
Converting a manual door
Most roll-up, sectional and tip-up doors can be motorised, provided the panel and guides are sound and there is space for the operator. The survey confirms it. Where a door is too far gone to be worth automating, we will say so.
Load shedding
Every motor we fit has a manual override, and we fit battery backup on request so the door keeps working normally through an outage. Ask for it at quoting stage and it is built into the price rather than added later.
Controls
- Remotes, extra handsets and keypads
- Safety beams — fitted as standard, not as an upgrade
- Integration with an existing gate motor or estate access system
- Courtesy lighting and auto-close timers
Replacing a failed operator
Bring us the make if you know it, or a photograph of the unit. We carry the common drives and can usually replace one within a single visit, including resetting the limits and testing the safety devices before we leave.
Choosing the right motor
The correct operator is decided by the weight of your door and how often it runs, not by what is on promotion. An undersized motor on a heavy double door is the single most common reason we are called back within two years — it works, briefly, and then the gears go. We size the drive after looking at the door, and we check the springs at the same time, because a motor fighting an unbalanced curtain is a motor on borrowed time.
Converting a manual door
Most roll-up, sectional and tip-up doors can be automated provided the panel and guides are sound and there is room for the operator. The survey confirms it and prices it. Where a door is too far gone for automation to be sensible, replacement plus a correctly sized motor usually costs less over five years than automating something that was already failing.
Load shedding
Every motor we fit has a manual override so the door opens by hand. For normal powered operation right through an outage we fit a battery backup — mention it at quoting stage and it is designed in rather than bolted on later. Backup units are sized to give a realistic number of cycles rather than an optimistic one.
Remotes, keypads and integration
Additional handsets, wall keypads, key switches and app control on current operators. We can pair a garage motor with an existing gate motor or estate access system so one remote handles both, which is usually what people actually want. Safety beams are fitted as standard on every installation, and closing force is set and tested before we hand over.
What a motor installation includes
Supply and fitting of the operator, brackets and rail, setting and testing of open and close limits, force adjustment within safe limits, safety beams fitted and tested, one or two remotes paired, and a handover covering both normal operation and the manual override. Where the door needs rebalancing to run properly on a motor, that is quoted upfront rather than discovered mid-installation.
Servicing an automated door
An automated garage door has more to go wrong than a manual one and rewards an annual check accordingly: spring balance, limit drift, safety beam alignment, rail and chain condition, and battery backup health. Backup batteries in particular degrade silently, and the moment you discover a dead one is invariably during load shedding.
Common questions
About garage door motors and automation
The right one for the weight and cycle count of your door, which is why we size it after looking at the door rather than selling one model to everyone. An undersized motor on a heavy double door is the most common reason we are back within two years.
Every motor we fit has a manual override so you can open the door by hand. For normal powered operation right through an outage, we fit a battery backup — tell us at quoting stage and it is included rather than retrofitted later.
Usually, yes — provided the door itself is sound. We would check the springs and balance at the same time, because a door that is out of balance is what kills operators, and replacing the motor without fixing that just resets the clock.
Yes. We supply additional handsets and keypads, and most current operators support app control. We can also pair a garage motor with an existing gate motor or estate access system so one remote does both.
